Merry Go-Round (Carousel) Parties at The Santa Monica Pier
The Merry Go-Round (Carousel) Building was designed and built in 1916 by Charles Looff, one of the original designers of the Santa Monica Pleasure Pier. Faithfully restored from 1981 to 1983, it is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. Motion pictures directors, television writers, fashion photographers, painters and the public have been charmed by it for generations.
The Byzantine-Moorish style building overlooking the California coastline attracts celebrities, tourists and residents alike, and children from all over the world! Owned by the City of Santa Monica since 1977, it's a reminder of California's golden history.
The merry-go-round is one of the few surviving all-wooden Carousels in the world - less than 70 continue to operate today. The fanciful and elegant old machine, with its painted ponies and chariots, lights, brass poles and mirrors, turns as smoothly now as ever thanks to constant care and maintenance. In 1990, each of the horse was taken apart, restored and newly painted by one of the foremost Carousel craftsmen in America. Just three years ago the central bearing and machinery was completely restored.
Thanks to all these efforts and its classic good looks, the Merry Go-Round (Carousel) has become one of Southern California's choice event sites. The building accommodates a wide variety of gatherings, including birthday parties, weddings, holiday celebrations, charity fund-raisers, film, TV, product introductions and fashion shoots.
The Merry Go-Round's (Carousel's) open design allows parties to be as large or intimate as you wish. Parents can host small birthday parties during operating hours and the entire facility and back deck can be rented by large groups and corporations for private events. Whether large or small, elaborate or simple, events and parties at the Santa Monica Pier Merry Go-Round (Carousel) are always memorable.
